Advent 2

“Comfort Now!”

Scriptures are Mark 1:1-8 & Isaiah 40:1-11

In Advent, our worship as Christians is deeply infused with yearning for the presence and power of God to be known yet again. In this season, we look with expectation for God to come among us again, just as God did in coming to us as the Christ child. In our focus scripture this week, again from the prophet Isaiah, God sends the prophet to proclaim God’s comfort to the people, not because everything is good but precisely because the worst things imaginable have happened. What brings comfort – true comfort, not simply numbness – in the midst of despair? And what do we need in order to ourselves become messengers and heralds of the presence of God’s comfort and hope now?
