Youngsun Cheon completed his Master of Divinity studies at the Vancouver School of Theology in the Spring of 2025, and is a candidate for Ordained Ministry in The United Church of Canada. He serves in ministry among us on a two-year appointment that forms the final stage of his candidacy pathway toward ordination.
Pastor Youngsun comes to Cloverdale United Church with plenty of previous church ministry experience, including being part of the ministry team at Becoming Church, one of the United Church new church start communities currently growing in New Westminster, along with having held a variety of both pastoral and lay ministry roles in his native South Korea. In Korea, he was affiliated with the Korean Methodist Church, and prior to his time at Vancouver School of Theology, also completed studies at Methodist Theological University in Seoul. Earlier, he also spent time in the Toronto area as an undergraduate at Seneca Polytechnic.
Mr. Cheon engages in general pastoral ministry throughout our congregation alongside Rev. Matt, as well with some special programmatic emphases on community engagement and on faith formation among newcomers-to-Christianity.
Cloverdale United Church recognizes that we worship, live, work, and play in traditional and unceded territories of Coast Salish peoples: primarily the Katzie, the Kwantlen, the Semiahmoo, the Snokomish, the Stolo, the Tsawwassen, and the Wsanec. We give thanks to and for them; we offer our respect to those ancestors who may be interred in this land. We seek to live with respect in this piece of Creation; we seek peace and justice among all who have called this land home.
