Over the last few weeks, you’ve probably heard or seen a number of different announcements about happenings surrounding the 100th anniversary of the church union that formed The United Church of Canada, way back on June 10, 1925. There are indeed a lot of different ways the milestone is being observed and celebrated, so here’s a quick cheat sheet to help you know how all the different events fit together:

  • Sunday, June 1: Cloverdale’s UCW unit leads their annual ThankOffering service with worship materials from the national UCW leadership themed around the centennial

  • Saturday, June 7: Community fair event at Northwood United Church, 11:00 - 2:30, featuring a local steel drum band playing, a concession for lunch, bouncy castle, games, etc. (corner of 156 Street & 88 Avenue in the Fleetwood section of Surrey) Event Poster Here.

  • Sunday, June 8: Pentecost Sunday! As we celebrate what’s often called the “birthday of the church”—that is, the origin event for the whole of the Christian church nearly 2000 years ago—our worship service here at CUC will include components drawn from the Inaugural Worship Service of The United Church of Canada from back in 1925 and also elements looking forward toward our future, including a couple of music selections from our forthcoming new supplemental songbook, Then Let Us Sing.

  • Sunday, June 8: The National Centennial Worship Service, coordinated by the United Church’s General Council Office and being held at Gower Street United Church in St John’s, Newfoundland. Livestreamed via YouTube, with the service starting at 2:30 pm Pacific (7:00 pm Nfld) https://www.youtube.com/live/bh4sW1kdpWo

  • Tuesday, June 10: On this, the actual Centennial Anniversary Day, friends from all across our West Fraser Cluster (North Delta, Surrey, and Langley) are invited to gather at the United Churches of Langley for fellowship, food, and to watch together a second national centennial service being prepared by Friends of the United Church Foundation with segments coming from all around the country. Gathering starting at 5:30, worship at 6:00, dessert potluck following.
