“The God of Your Father, The God Who Will Be”

Matthew 16: 21-28 and Exodus 3:1-15

This Sunday we continue our journey through Exodus and arrive at one of Scripture’s most profound encounters between God and a hesitant servant. Moses has long since left Egypt behind and is tending his father-in-law’s flock in the wilderness when an ordinary day is interrupted by and extraordinary presence. At the burning bush, Moses is confronted not only with a calling, but with a revelation. Before God tells Moses what he must do, God tells Moses who God is: “the God of your father,” the God who has been present all along. And when Moses asks for God’s name, he hears a promise that points toward both present and future: “I AM WHO I WILL BE.” The God of Moses' past is also the God who will be with him in the days ahead. As we worship today, we are invited to trust that same faithful presence in our own lives.
