“When Grace Finds Us in the Bathroom”

Matthew 14:22-33 and Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28

This Sunday we listen again to Genesis, where some stories reveal who God is and others reveal who we are. Today we meet Joseph at the beginning of a long and painful journey. He is loved deeply by his father, yet resented by his brothers-resentment that grows into betrayal. As we hear this story, we are invited to ask: whose voices are quiet, and does silence mean they were inactive? The brothers speak through action more than words, and Joseph himself is carried forward by forces he cannot control. Yet God is moving even in the places where speech is absent.

In this passage, Joseph is sent toward his brothers, only to be sold in to a future he never chose. The path is harsh, but God’s work continues through the wounds.
