This final Sunday of Advent moves us from watching and waiting for signs of God's yet-to-come kingdom into the celebration of God's already coming to us in the Christ Child. Signs are given to ancient kings that speak of one named Emmanuel, "God with us", and a dream comes to Joseph, instructing him not to leave Mary, but to welcome the child she is bearing and name him Jesus. As it turns out, the signs of God’s activity don’t only happen in some far off “heaven” or in the depths of hell-ish despair. The signs happen too in those places in-between those two… that is to say, right in the places where we ourselves dwell!
