Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15

This Sunday, our journey with the prophet Jeremiah continues. The witness of this ancient voice, who ministered around the time the Israelite nation was taken into exile in Babylon, proves surprisingly relevant in our own era, an era when so many of us feel like we are in exile from all that seemed stable, familiar, and secure.

In this week's selection, Jeremiah buys a piece of land.  This may seem like a mundane thing, but in the face of the immediately impending destruction of the nation by an outside empire, the purchase was an embodiment hope in the promise that, eventually,y the land would be there to reclaim.  The story challenges us to think about how God invites us to "invest" in signs of hope even—and especially—in the midst of situations that seem hopeless and lost.
