23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Thus Saith The Lord: I Can Reshape You”

A Service of the Word for the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 7, 2025: IN-PERSON and ONLINE at 10:30 a.m.
The Rev. Matthew Emery, lead minister, preaching
Jeremiah 18:1-11

As we step into September this weekend, we hear again from Jeremiah, one of the "major" Old Testament prophets. The witness of this ancient voice, who ministered around the time the Israelite nation was taken into exile in Babylon, proves surprisingly relevant in our own era—an era when, like Jeremiah's, talking heads "say 'Peace, peace,' when there is no peace"; an era when many, including the church itself, feel like they are in exile from all that seemed stable, familiar, and secure.

In this week's selection, Jeremiah visits a potter's house and watches as the potter had the power to rework a spoiled vessel into something new and good. In great grace and mercy, God has that power of renewal and recreation, too—not rejecting the misshapen 'clay,' but transforming it.

This being the unofficial “regathering” Sunday for many North American congregations, we’ll see the rhythms of activity beginning to pick back up here at CUC, with the Choir resuming, Children’s Church on offer, and more. And be sure to stick around following worship for a “special” treat at coffee hour in honour of Youngsun’s first Sunday among us on staff as Associate Minister.
