Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Mustard seeds. Yeast. Hidden treasure. A very valuable pearl. A catch of fish. What’s the big deal with Jesus and these small and hidden things? This week, we hear Jesus provide still more possible lenses through which we might imagine what the “kingdom of heaven” is like – that is, what life is like in in the true and ultimate reality that God is working us and all creation toward. Will we know God’s kingdom when we see it, and if so, how? What’s present there, and what isn’t? Jesus doesn’t directly answer these questions, but with image upon image and story upon story, he invades our imaginations with the reality and promise of what God is up to… thanks be to God!
